Q: What is Powder Coating?

A: Powder Coating is a process where finely granulated powder is applied to a part through a special gun. The gun emits an electric charge to the powder (+) and the part is grounded (-). This creates a attraction of the powder to the part.

Q: How long after the part is powder coated can it be placed into service?

A: As soon as the part has been given time to cool enough it can be touched with bare hands safely it can be placed into service. Unlike wet paints there is no cure time other than the time it is in the oven (generally 20 minutes).

Q: I can buy a rattle can for $.99 at the dollar store, why should I pay to have something powder coated?

A: This is a common question. Paint requires a good deal of maintenance to continue looking show quality. Powder coat only requires a wet rag and some water. The items I have sone for myself I generally wipe with a soft towel and glass cleaner or a similar product. Waxing or polishing is not required, in some cases polishing can actually damage the UV protection that is present in the final product.

Q: Is Powder coat indestructible?

A: NO! There is no finish that is indestructible, even plating is suspect to gouging or scratches if hit with a sharp enough object is scraped along it. Powder Coat has 75% of the hardness of chrome plating, but way more pliable than is counter parts (plating and paint). Also unlike chrome the cured powder has formed a strong mechanical bond with the substrate.

Q: Can I reduce the cost of powder coating any?

A: YES! The easiest way to reduce your cost is to strip all the rubber, gaskets, trim, grease, oil, and any other pieces from the metal part to be Powder Coated. Another way is to have the part prep to you ability such as sandblasting, paint stripping, grinding, and general cleaning. Some of our customers have saved a large portion of the price just by having the part in prestine condition when we have recieved the item.

Q: Why should I ship my part to IPC when I have a powder coat shop an hour or so away?

A: 1. TURN AROUND TIME! In most cases (if shipped) we can have your parts returned to you within 2 weeks of you shipping it. Our turn around time is greatly effected by the condition of the part when we recieve it. Local customers can recieve their parts in a week in most cases.

2. SERVICE AND RELIABILITY! When you recieve your parts back you will get a care package with information about how to maintain your POWDER COATED item. With every batch we Powder Coat we shoot test panels to run certain test on to insure your part is cured, scratch resistant, and color/gloss positive.
